The Hanging & Redempton of John Gordon enjoys a 4.85-Star rating on Amazon.com. Here's what a few people have to say about the book:
NAMED BY THE PROVIDENCE JOURNAL ONE OF THE TOP FIVE NON-FICTION BOOKS OF 2013
"Paul's absorbing book concludes the saga of John Gordon. He has the honor of providing its finishing touch. He has done so not only by drawing on previous research but also by visiting the scenes of the crime and by thoroughly examining the public documents entrusted to his care. His thoughtful, well-crafted, meticulously detailed book is not only a compelling forensic brief for the defense but also a record of John Gordon's final triumph over a legal system once blinded by bigotry and a chief justice (Job Durfee) who epitomized it." Patrick T. Conley Historian Laureate of Rhode Island
"Well researched story. Fascinating look at prejudice in the courts. This is a well written, well researched, and easy to read story of murder and the wrongful conviction of a man based on ethnic prejudice. The story is so compelling I think it would make a great movie." Dr. Gerald J. Fay Seattle, Washington
"Well written and enlightening book. I found it intriguing and easy to follow." Dr. David Petreccia Los Angeles, California
"The book is scrupulously researched, and no psychics seem to have been consulted. Instead, Caranci has used his position as Deputy Secretary of State to consult those original documents that still exist, as well as drawing upon the pioneering research of historians Pat Conley, Scott Molloy and many others to bring us the most concise and precise history of the event possible." Steve Ahlquist RIFuture.org
"You get a true sense of sitting in the courtroom as witness after witness provide perjured testimony amounting to only circumstantal evidence against the Gordons...and you stand witness to the emotional final hours of John Gordon's life." Ethan Shorey The North Providence Breeze April 3-9 2013
"This book is indredibly well told and a true page turner... however, one can't truly let go of this book once they've finished it. The story will haunt you. It is truly a sad story that makes you consider whether or not this could ever happen again. It also makes you reflect on capital punishment in our society." Raina C. Smith, Author, The 13th Apostle and Divine Providence
"Caranci, a North Providence resident and Rhode Island History buff, did a lot of great research to put this book together. The story...captivated me with the description of the murder of Sprague, to the point where I fell asleep with the book on my chest because I couldn't put it down until my brain shut off. The photographs really painted a picture of the time and the characters...Caranci brought this piece of Rhode Island history to life, tragic ending (for most involved) and all." Motif Magazine, September 2013
"Amazingly well written. Portrays a clear-cut image of the effects of judicial corruption and societal prejudice, some of which is still taking place to this present day. If you're looking for a book to keep your wide-eyed attention every step of the way I strongly recommend this one." "Goldengirl" Amazon.com Reader Review
"Wonderfully written! Couldn't put it down! In this book the author provides a deeply propelling historical insight into the bigotry and hatred that existed in early America. Caranci drew me in with his focus on the Gordon family, their dreams, their struggles to realize those dreams, and how those dreams were shattered. His meticulous description of John Gordon's trial left me with a greater understanding of the deadly impact of bigotry and religious persecution; the hanging of an innocent man! An excellent read; I believe this book would translate into a fascinating legal thriller!" C. Anderson Amazon.com Reader Review March 9, 2014
"Fast-paced, action-packed, and meticulously researched. This is an unbelievable true story and has all the elements that maintain the reader's interest; murder, trial proceedings, a wrongful execution and the ultimate pardon of an innocent man. I highly recommend this book." "Soulgirl" Amazon.com Reader Review
"I am a history buff and recently received this book as a gift from a fellow history lover. I was amazed at the amount of time and research that went into this book. In a book based on true events you expect facts, but not so many incredible details. There were times when I was reading this book where I actually felt as if I was there in the moment. The anger and frustration I felt at times while reading the story was raw. For an author to accomplish that is no ordinary skill, but a gift. I look forward to reading Mr. Caranci's future books and would highly recommend this book to my colleagues. "Dianbooks" Amazon.com Reader Review
"A very interesting book about the last execution in Rhode Island, which was one of the earliest states to do away with the death penalty. That was largely due to this miscarriage of justice against an Irish immigrant in the 1840s, accused of murdering a very wealthy member of the WASP establishment, Amasa Sprague. Mr. Caranci does a great job giving background and history. I hope to go see him at an appearence he's making soon to discuss the book." Matthew Goodreads.com Reader Review
"This is a well written and thoroughly researched book on Rhode Island's last execution. I would highly recommend this book for all to read." Sadie Amazon.com Reader Review
What a wonderful book! As a high school history teacher in Rhode Island I will not hesitate to use this book for a thematic unit on RI History. Zeena Barbarita Johnston, RI
Awsome! I could not put this book down! It is amazing that the judicial system was so lax and prejudice. The writing was great and I felt like I was living in Cranston at the time. The writer certainly brought you back in time and made you feel the anguish that the Gordon family was going through. Looking forward to reading future books by this author! Riveting and engaging! I didn't want to put it down!!! I felt like I was instantly transported back in time!!! The story is riveting and told in such an engaging fashion that you can't help but feel that you are there, witnessing every moment. From a historical standpoint, it is truly amazing to realize what transpired in the state I live in! And how an interest in justice over 166 years later, produced an exoneration is astounding!!!! This is better than any reality show on TV...this is reality in the raw!!!!! Drama, mystery, murder, plot twists and unexpected endings and a large dose of history... this book delivers it all!!!! Marie Carpinelli Johnston, RI
Entertaining, engaging, educational. I loved this book! Sat down and read it all the way through. It is very well written and flows beautifully. It reads like the best historical fiction. It is entertaining and engaging, as well as educational. I highly recommend it. Barbara Supsky Amazon.com Reader Review
Excellent book! Mr. Caranci does a tremendous job retelling one of the most fascinating stories in Rhode Island history. His extensive research and writing style has resulted in a book that is tough to put down, and teaches about the struggles of immigrant experiences in a society riddled with corruption and speculation. Enjoy! Christopher Carty North Kingstown
This book had me absolutely enthralled from the very first sentence! I just couldn't put it down. It is jam packed with fascinating information regarding the murder of Amasa and the trials of the Gordon family. Mr. Caranci doesn't just tell you the story. He transforms you back to that point in time by explaining exactly how the economic, social and government conditions were at the time. Don't think I mean any part of it was boring! You can actually imagine living in that time! His writing style is highly descriptive and flows nicely. Whenever you have a "why" cross your mind, just keep reading. He ends up answering it! I don't know how long it took him to gather this information, but practically every sentence has factual, historical information. This is honestly one of my favorite books. I only have ONE complaint - it's SO full of information, I'm going to have to read it again! I'm truly thankful Mr. Caranci expended all this effort. What a wonderful way to pay homage to John Gordon. Elaine Gagne Amazon.com Reader Review
Insightful and Engaging - December 26, 2013 Paul Caranci has written the definitive account of the trial and execution of the Irish immigrant John Gordon for the murder of the prominent Rhode Island industrialist Amasa Sprague. The 1844 trial of John Gordon was the Sacco and Vanzetti case of its day. Caranci offers an hour-by-hour account of what happened on the night of the murder—something that has never been done before. Erik Chaput, Author of The People's Martyr
I covered this TRUE STORY as a TV reporter when the General Assembly recently expunged Mr. Gordon's record. This book is a comprehensive and easy read. The author managed to find many interesting facts about this legendary case. I learned and appreciated much more how Mr. Gordon was most likely wrongly convicted. If you like history and if you like the law you'll find this book most compelling. Mr. Caranci collaborates with some very knowledgeable people to tell this fascinating story. PLUS, you'll come away proud of Rhode Island's courage for doing away with the death penalty. I love non-fiction and I would highly recommend this marvelous work. The Promise of Fatima: One Hundred Years of History, Mystery and Faith Mike - Amazon Review 5.0 out of 5 starsBest historical summary a Fatima and it's aftermath that I have ever come across. Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2019I have had an interest in the story of Fatima since I was a child. I have read a variety of books and articles on the topic on and off throughout the years. There are accusations, counter-accusations, conspiracy theories, and a confusing number of accounts of things that have been said which make this is a difficult to follow story. This is the first comprehensive summary of the events and the aftermath that feels balanced and objective in discussing the controversies and competing understandings of the events in the wake of Fatima. The telling of the events themselves at Fatima is extremely detailed and Strikes me as extremely authentic. I learned quite a few new things about the post Fatima life of sister Lucia. And I expect I will have to read again the sections on controversy to formulate my own opinion as to whether or not the Catholic Church's interpretation of the Third Secret is one that I buy into. Thank you for the author for this very well organized expose.
Julien Ayotte, Mystery/Thriller Author - Amazon Review 5.0 out of 5 starsyou won't be disappointed!! Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2017There are many books on the apparitions at Fatima in Portugal, some more detailed than others. Paul Caranci's recent publication in honor of the 100th anniversary of these events covers it all. He does not shy away from the controversies associated with the three secrets Our Lady revealed to the young children, and focuses on the individual lives that each of them led until their deaths. While other versions of these events cover various parts of this elaborate miraculous event, Caranci delves deeply into the lives of the children and the overwhelming burden suddenly placed squarely on their shoulders, a series of events impossible for the young children to fully comprehend. What could a 9-year-old possibly know about the conversion of Russia, not even knowing where Russia is. Why Our Lady chose these three children to convey certain messages to the world we will likely never truly know. But if you want a very thorough and well-written account of the happenings at Fatima, read Caranci's book...you won't be disappointed!!
Pauline Lapre - Amazon Review 5.0 out of 5 starsFascinating account of the apparitions that took place in Fatima Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2020I have always been interested in the Story of Our Lady of Fatima and the visionaries who witnessed Our Lady’s appearances. I’ve read many accounts and was fortunate enough to be able to visit Portugal last year and see all the places of which these accounts speak. It really was a blessed experience for me and I look forward to going back. Paul Caranci’s book was a wonderful surprise. It was filled with so many details about Lucia, Jacinta and Francesco and their friends and families lives. It gives details of what was happening in the world at the time. He is an amazing writer and his attention to details and history puts the story in your mind as if you were there. I highly recommend this book it will deepen your faith and increase your Marian devotion .
Michele Marsella, Greenville, Rhode Island - Amazon Review 5.0 out of 5 starsDeepened My Faith Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2020I grew up knowing a little about the apparitions at Fatima. I never understood the depth of faith and the strength of conviction that these three children - Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco - had until I read Paul's book. Very moving. This book is beautifully written. I could actually "see" these events that happened over a century ago. The passages in Genesis have a deeper meaning for me now. We need to hear and understand this message.

Terror in Wichita: A True Story of One Woman's Courage and Her Will to Live
Anthony B. - Amazon Review How would you react if confronted by Evil?? April 3, 2020 Format : Paperback Terror in Wichita is more than just a true-crime story of two brothers who go on a murderous crime spree. It is a book that will make you "contemplate" your own reaction if you were ever confronted by evil. Terror in Wichita recounts in detail the events that led up to the brutal and senseless murder of 4 young people on a cold winter night. The author goes beyond the headlines and newspaper reports by taking you on an hour by hour odyssey of the brutality that these young people endured at the hands of the Carr brothers. The book serves as a reminder of the evil that is among us and that we should always be aware and prepared to react if ever confronted by it. The simple act of answering your door can lead to unimaginable events. As you go on their journey you start to consider your reaction. Would you fight, flight, or submit to the Carr brothers?. As the reader, it becomes an interesting mental exercise and one that may serve you well if ever confronted by evil. However, it should be noted that this book is not just about evil but also about a woman's inner strength and her incredible will to survive. It recounts the efforts of one woman to defy death as well as her crucial role in ensuring justice. I particularly enjoyed the "silver lining" at the end of the book as it renewed my faith in the human spirit and that goodness and love will overcome evil. This "silver lining" demonstrates the strength of spirit and the ability to turn an horrendous life changing event into a life path of fulfillment and happiness. Terror in Wichita does not sanitize the brutality of the Carr brothers during their crime spree and provides graphic details during their hours of terror (not suitable for young readers). These details make for required reading (I read it in one sitting) as it invokes you to empathize for the victims as you experience their terror, pain and suffering. It also serves to invoke a personal desire for justice during their trial and that the ultimate punishment be administered!! Terror in Wichita takes you on that journey!! Highly Recommended!!
